This Mayan City of Copan was abandoned in the early 10th century and discovered in 1570 with excavation starting in the 19th century and still ongoing.
The architecture is impressive and there are many stone sculptures and intricate hieroglyphs amongst the ruins.
If you love history, then buy into a tour so that the guide can walk you through each structure with the stories behind them. I dropped out of the tour to explore at my own pace as the guided tour was a little slow for my liking and made my own discoveries along the way.
There are also many beautiful Scarlet Macaws that have taken up residence around the ruins and make for some great photo opportunities with the ruins in the background.
The Macaws are so beautiful! Perfect addition to the impressive ruins!
